According to the IMD, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Andaman Sea on Saturday. It is then expected to move towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next three to four days. The weather system has contributed to thunderstorms and rain in Kolkata and nearby areas.
The weather department has forecast rain and thunderstorms in the districts of North Bengal until Saturday. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri are also likely to receive heavy rain at one or two places.
The IMD said strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected across the districts of South Bengal. Heavy rain in the Salt Lake area near Kolkata on Thursday led to waterlogging on roads and traffic congestion, causing difficulties for people returning home in the evening. However, traffic remained considerably lighter on Friday as the state government had declared a holiday for Vishwakarma Puja.
According to the IMD, Alipurduar recorded the highest rainfall in the state, receiving 105 mm in the 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Friday. IMD data showed that Salt Lake recorded 69 mm of rain during the same period. Other areas that received significant rainfall included Jalpaiguri with 51 mm, Diamond Harbour with 50 mm, Bardhaman with 45 mm and Darjeeling with 41 mm.
The weather department has forecast intermittent rain across all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, from Friday through Sunday. According to the Friday morning bulletin, rain is expected in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, both Medinipur districts and South 24 Parganas over the next few hours. Light to moderate rain may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph.
There is currently no possibility of heavy rain in South Bengal, while a yellow warning has been issued for these districts until Sunday.
Rain has decreased across North Bengal. On Friday, heavy rain was expected only in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar may experience isolated rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Some rain is also possible in Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur.
However, no heavy rain has been forecast for the remaining parts of North Bengal, and from Saturday, no weather-related warning has been issued for any district in the region.
